About Youghal
Youghal is a town located on the south coast of Ireland in County Cork. Its name is derived from the Gaelic Irish word Eochaill meaning Yew wood, a reference to the abundance of Yew trees which once covered the area. The town's population is approximately 7,000 people with a population hinterland of circa 15,000. Situated 30 miles (48kms) from Cork city, 60 miles from Waterford city and 240 miles from Dublin, Youghal is on the main Cork - Rosslare route (N25).

Geographically, it sits at the mouth of the Blackwater River and has miles of unspoilt coastline and beaches. The town is quite long - roughly 3 miles due to the fact that only a narrow stip of level land seperates the Atlantic Ocean from the rising hillsides which climb steeply in height behind the town. It is also quite old, the Vikings having settled here in the 9th century with many historical buildings and features still to be seen - the town walls (13th century onwards), St Mary's Church (thirteenth century), Tyntes Castle (Sixteenth century) and the Clock Gate (Eighteenth century), just four of our many historical structures.

Youghal, due to its location, has a long sea faring tradition, more vessels using the port of Youghal in its heyday than Cork city. There is still an active port in Youghal and a fishing fleet though the majority of marine activity today is leisure related. The list of amenities Youghal has to offer the resident and the tourist are many - there are two quality blue flag beaches to be availed of, boating activities and a newly built swimming pool. Picturesque river side walks, beachside strolls, indoor funfairs, GAA, rugby and soccer pitches, golf course, pitch & putt course, handball court, tenis club, snooker club, playgrounds, parks - the list goes on and on!

A mixture of employment opportunities exist in Youghal from the manufacturing & construction industries, to retail, services and tourist related employment. Even for those who commute to work, Youghal is only a forty minute drive to and from Cork city.

Infrastructurally, Youghal has progressed in leaps and bounds, a by-pass allieviating much of the traffic congestion on its streets. It is served by a Garda, Fire, Lifeboat & Coastguard Station, Post office, all the main banks, three supermarkets, secondary school, three primary schools (including a Gaelscoil), three Catholic Churches, one Church of Ireand and one Methodist. There are numerous quality bars, restaraunts hotels & shops to be found throughout the town.
